92 Second Sound Off: 10/16/09
Hi, I am Shawn Arnell with this "92 Second Sound Off" on Sports Animal 920...
Dyer Straits
I am torn, I really am. I understand how teenagers make mistakes at the risk of wanting to appear cool to their peers, but there is a difference between boys being boys and an utter communication breakdown. In saying that, I just cant shake the Michael Dyer video. Why? Because he is a star athlete who clearly knew what he was doing.
Michael has been on our show three times. He is a nice young man who, under the guidance of his uncle, sought advice from Walt Williams. Michaels advisors felt it was important to seek an outside party to help find the Little Rock Christian star running back a college home. Michaels family circle is genuine and really solid on the direction of his future which makes the video more bizarre.
The video is proof that despite how tight a ship families operate, peer influence is the toughest thing to overcome. Do you honestly think Michael would have made those comments in front of a camera with Walt and his uncle present? NO! They would have ADVISED him to keep such thoughts to himself and keep on moving forward. And what if you are Coach Petrino, do you really want to offer a scholarship to someone who comes across as ungrateful for the opportunity to play in his home state?
Michael needs to understand that Arkansas fans would love to see him running through the A but if Arkansas is not for him, then he will be wished well. Dyer would not be the first star athlete to go elsewhere but he may be the first Arkansas athlete who thumbs his nose at the fan base before taking his sick skills out of state.
Michael, you seriously need to consider verbally committing to a school soon. Whether you are going there or not is irrelevant. Committing is the only way for people to forget about your comments.
Honestly, I could care less where you play college ball. Last time I checked Wingo, Davis, Johnson and Green will return next season and Coach Petrino has the program going in the right direction. Arkansas does not land a ton of national talent and when we do, we take pride in saying they are one of us but it is becoming very apparent the Natural State is not in your future. You are a hell of a player and a person whom I honestly feel is misunderstood but this one falls on you. You should do the right thing and commit to where you want to go. Do it, Michael, because your home state is on the verge of not caring where you attend and you are too good for that...and so are the fans.
Shawn Arnell serves as program director for Sports Animal 920 in Little Rock and also co-host Shawn and Wally, 4p-7p, on the Arkansas Radio Network. He can be reached at shawn.arnell@citcomm.com.

(1/29/2010 9:08:13 AM) Shawn, I missed this when you originally posted/said it, but this is a good summary of how the fanbase feels for the most part. Hate to see a talent like this go to a divisional rival, but talent isn't everything, and Bobby seems to like guys who have their attitude in the right place. Personally, I think he'll ultimately regret his decision, and he'll regret having burned some bridges along the way. But to each his own, and I still hope he has success -- once he leaves the SEC. |
